The local MP for South West Surrey, Jeremy Hunt, celebrated the long awaited opening of the Hindhead tunnel today. The official opening
ceremony on Wednesday was attended by local dignitaries and the Secretary of State for Transport, Rt Hon Philip Hammond MP who officially opened the project. This is the conclusion of a long campaign for a tunnel at Hindhead that will bring an end to traffic chaos that has plighted the area for so long. The tunnel is 1.2 miles long and cost around £371 million.
Jeremy said: “Not a few old hands thought they would never see the day when Hindhead finally got a tunnel. But it has finally happened - on time and to budget. I remember the first debate I ever secured in parliament was to campaign for the tunnel so it is a dream come true for me and many others who have campaigned for far longer than I have. Virginia Bottomley in particular deserves a lot of credit for never giving up. Finally the people of Hindhead have got their village back. Hooray!""
