Local MP Jeremy Hunt met with local campaigners in Godalming on Friday to discuss the plan to open a Tesco Express on the site of the old Wey Inn. There are safety concerns over increased traffic and also the potential implication of congestion on the A3100 as well as worries for the future of the local newsagent next door. Jeremy looked around the site and then met with the campaigners who included Waverley Borough Councillors Nick Williams and Ross Welland as well as members of the Chamber of Commerce.
Jeremy has vowed to do all he can to support the campaigners who have collected nearly 5000 signatures on a petition opposing the new store. One of the problems is that Tesco do not need planning permission as there is no change in use in the premises. This means they can open a shop without seeking official permission from Waverley. Jeremy will write to Eric Pickles, the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government to seek clarification on this loophole and what he plans to do about it. Jeremy also promised to contact Surrey County Council and ask them when they plan to carry out a traffic study. The campaigners are keen to hold a public meeting and Jeremy has agreed to chair this and invite Tesco to attend.
Jeremy said: “I am very concerned about the planned new store which has attracted huge amounts of opposition. The strength of feeling in the local community is evident from the nearly 5000 strong petition. There are very real concerns about congestion and road safety and the impact on independent retailers. I hope Tesco will accept my invitation to a public meeting and will take on board the large volume of opposition in the local area.”
