18th August 2021
Jeremy Hunt will be officially launching a campaign on Thursday 16th September 2021 to raise money for a new surgical facility at Royal Surrey NHS Foundation Trust, to improve patient experience and prepare for a rise in demand for cancer surgery.
Strongly backing the local NHS as it seeks to address the backlog in elective operating caused by the pandemic, and supporting Royal Surrey’s goal to become a pre-eminent cancer hub in the South East, Jeremy will address members of the public at an evening health-focussed event at Haslemere Hall, Haslemere.
Jeremy Hunt MP said: "We want to raise money towards a new Cancer and Surgical Innovation Centre for the hospital which would support Royal Surrey as a pre-eminent cancer hub with the very latest treatments, as well as supporting its non-cancer surgical work. A dedicated unit would also mean cancer and other vital surgery will be in a strong position to continue uninterrupted in future pandemics or during periods of winter pressure. The state-of-the-art surgical facility will deliver world-class surgery and peri-operative care. It will be a powerhouse of innovation and technology of which we will all be proud. The centre will include an institute for research, training and education for the next generation of surgical specialists."
Royal Surrey NHS Foundation Trust’s Chief Executive, Louise Stead said: "The new facility will be designed for the highest quality patient experience and will support modern pathways of care for a high volume of cancer surgery as well as benign specialties such as Orthopaedics and Ophthalmology. This design will see cancer surgery taking place in a centre of excellence for surgery more broadly, meaning innovation and learning is shared rapidly across specialities."
Royal Surrey is a centre of excellence for robotic surgery with three surgical robots in use for patients and one dedicated to training. The new facility will see this capacity expand further with the creation of a pioneering robotics centre for the UK. Surgical robots are predominantly used for cancer surgeries and benefits include improved accuracy of dissection, fewer complications and faster recovery times.
Demand for cancer surgery is growing as earlier cancer diagnosis opens up opportunities for effective surgical treatment of cancers at an earlier stage than has typically been possible in the past. In addition, innovative oncology treatment is shrinking more advanced cancers to open up the possibility of surgical treatment. The new surgical facility will meet this demand and save lives.
Royal Surrey is a leading specialist cancer centre integrated with all the services of an acute general hospital, meaning that cancer patients receive the full range of care needed in the one place.
The project will involve:
- A full redesign of Royal Surrey’s theatre capacity;
- New spaces for patients to prepare, rest and recover from surgery;
- New equipment and technology;
- New theatres to increase capacity;
- And much more.
Jeremy will be joined by senior speakers from Royal Surrey NHS Foundation Trust, Surrey Heartlands CCG and Haslemere GP Surgery at the health event.
Tickets are available now with a 50p booking fee via Haslemere Hall. The socially distanced event starts at 18.00 -19.30 on Thursday 16th September 2021. http://www.haslemerehall.co.uk/haslemere-hall-events/launch-of-the-campaign-for-a-cancer-institute-for-the-royal-surrey/
