Jeremy Hunt, Culture Secretary and local MP, is encouraging schools to see the Pied Piper Theatre Company’s performance of ‘Great Gran’s Great Games’.
The play, written by Mike Kenny, has been awarded the Inspire Mark for the Cultural Olympiad. Artistic Director of Pied Piper, Tina Williams, wanted young audiences to feel part of London 2012 and to have some understanding of the importance of the Olympics. The play tells the story of a Great Grandmother who swam in the 1948 Olympics and her great grandson who is scared of water.
Waverley Arts and Sports Development, DC Leisure and the Betty Riseely Fund are ensuring that local children have an opportunity to see a performance together with a free swim at their local leisure centre. Schools in Cranleigh will see the play at Cranleigh Arts Centre and in Farnham, at The Maltings. Ewhurst and Farncombe Infant Schools, Loseley Fields and Green Oak Primary Schools will also benefit from the funding that Waverley has given to this project.
Jeremy Hunt said: “I am really looking forward to seeing the play for myself in the New Year, I have heard that it is one not to be missed. It really is amazing the way the Olympics is inspiring people up and down the country and The Pied Piper Theatre Company is doing an excellent job of educating young people on the history of this great event”
