It is hard to believe that Easter has already passed and what a hectic 2013 it has been so far.
Last month you may have noticed that I have been rather busy in my capacity as Secretary of State for Health. I continue to focus on securing safe and compassionate care for all and to raising standards. My previous support for the campaign to save the A&E department at the Royal Surrey County Hospital and my frequent involvement with Haslemere and Milford hospitals has provided me with important grounding for which I am very grateful. I have been following events at Haslemere Hospital closely since it was announced that a ward was closed in December and patients were transferred to Farnham whilst essential repairs were carried out. I am pleased that a shuttle bus service is being offered to the families and friends of relocated patients which will make visiting much easier. I understand that its re-opening is scheduled for Mid May and will continue to monitor the situation.
Ensuring effective extended care for those with chronic conditions is also a huge priority and this month I visited the Broadwater Lodge care home in Godalming (pictured) and witnessed the excellent work by the staff there. Better early diagnosis of dementia and more access to appropriate care and support for all is vital if we are to meet the challenge of an ageing society.
I also had a very enjoyable visit to the Meath in Godalming where I toured the home and met with the staff and patients. I am extremely proud of the remarkable care taking place there and the prodigious energy and inventiveness of the staff.
At the start of the month I opened the new exhibition at Farnham Museum celebrating the 250th anniversary of the birth of William Cobbett, celebrating his life and work as a writer and MP. Known as 'Farnham's son' his work as a prolific writer, campaigner and MP was astounding and a real inspiration to me personally and it was an honour for me to mark this special anniversary.
I continue to referee for the youth football league in the area (indeed am doing the Cup Final in no less than a fortnight!) and am so impressed by all the local initiatives to encourage young people to take part in sport within their community. I love doing the matches although I dearly hope that the weather gets warmer - it snowed during the last match in Haslemere!
